Close-up of wire nose/eye
I created this sculpture in 2019 as an experiment in 3D design. The goal was to create something personal to me, which makes this sculpture a particular favorite of mine. I have always loved mythology, particularly Greek and Roman mythology. Artemis (or Diana) is the Greek (or Roman) goddess of the moon & the hunt. Her symbols include the new moon, and a majestic deer. I painted a mannequin head to resemble a new moon, and used shades of dark grey to give the black some texture. I used clay wrapped around wire to create two deer antlers, which I attached to the mannequin head with epoxy.

After the antlers were firmly attached, I painted them black to blend with the head. Using the antlers as support, I carefully wrapped wire and shaped it into the head of a lion. The mane of the line was created by wrapping short bundles of wire around the central from of the line head. Once attached, I was able to fan them out and give them more of a hair-like feel.
Although a lion is not typically associated with Artemis, they hold a special meaning for me. I love their strength, ferocity and courage; and as Artemis was fiercely protective of those in her protection, it was a logical choice for me to combine their images in this work.
